FAQs about Breathwork in San Diego

You may have seen more and more breathwork classes popping up in San Diego. As you decide which one to try, you might have some questions. As a certified breathwork facilitator, I would love to help you learn more about breathwork and answer some of the common questions there are about breathwork.

 What is breathwork?

Breathwork is a process of using the breath in an intentional way to impact emotional, mental, and physical health. Breathwork can be used to activate or regulate the nervous system. There are many types of breathwork. It is good to ask the facilitator what type of breathwork they offer. I facilitate conscious breathwork.

What is Conscious breathwork?

Conscious Energy Breathing, came from rebirthing breathwork and is a circular breathing pattern with no pauses or gaps in the breath. You can choose how fast and deep the breath goes, using your body’s intuition. After breathing in this way for some time, there is a period of allowing the breath to return to its natural state, while you are in a deep meditative state. What I love about this form of breathwork is how gentle yet powerful it can be.

During the session you may experience an emotional or physical release of energy. At the end of the session there is time to debrief and integrate your experience. You can expect the experience to continue to impact you over the course of the next for days or weeks after a session.

Wait.. aren’t all breathwork practices the same?

No, not all practices are the same. Some breathwork is heavily guided with a facilitator talking through the entire time. Some breathwork is very physical and intense. There are many paths to approaching healing and thus there are many types of breathwork.

Do I need a facilitator for breathwork?

I recommend starting your breathwork  with a facilitator, just so you have support and safety held for you during the session. We all breathe! Which means any of us can do breathwork on our own. The facilitator is there to provide support so you don’t have to do this alone. Too often in our culture we want to be alone. But trauma is an isolating force that can be healed in relationship to others. Facilitation provides safety, support for your process and to help you move through whatever comes up, from start to finish.

How much training does a facilitator need?

Not all facilitators have the same training or experience. Some trainings are done in a weekend. My training was over the course of a year, with lots of experience and intensives with my mentor. I continue to reach out for consultation as I refine my skills as a facilitator. I also used to be a mental health therapist and am trauma informed when working with my clients. Please be sure that when you sign up for a class you know the qualifications of the facilitator so that you can feel safe and comfortable in your session.

What do I need to know to prepare for breathwork?

Since every breathwork is different, you will want to ask this of your breathwork facilitator. I recommend my clients to come to me after 2 hours of not eating, hydrated with water and wearing comfy clothes. I provide a blanket and eye mask for clients to use. Oh! And bring an open heart and mind.

You deserve support from a great facilitator when you embark on your breathwork journey. Breathwork isn’t just about breathing, it’s about tapping into our bodies, minds, hearts and our spirit for healing. I hope this helps you find the right breathwork in San Diego.
