Finding Breathwork in San Diego

San Diego is often seen as one of the more progressive spots to find a variety of healing modalities. From reiki to acupuncture to breathwork, new services are popping up all the time. Why is that anyway? Some of these modalities have been around for centuries.

People are now more open than ever before to taking care of themselves and also recognize that traditional western medicine doesn’t necessarily have all the answers.

That means, people want help to heal from their trauma, anxiety, depression and more. Breathwork is a somatic practice that can help you do just that.

There are lots of different kinds of breathwork that you can find in San Diego. From individual classes to group workshops lasting a day or two, holotropic to shamanic and conscious breathwork - there are so many options!

I want to help you find breathwork in San Diego

This is what I tell my friends when they ask me how to find breathwork facilitation.

Find your purpose. First you want to think about why you want to do breathwork and this will inform what kind of breathwork to look for. For some, people are looking for relaxation and wanting a more breathwork and meditation combo. Holotropic breathwork sessions are longer and involve creating a mandala to process the breathwork session itself as it often can bring up emotions and traumas. I offer Conscious Breathwork and many of my clients utilize it for settling their nervous systems while also processing grief, addiction issues, anxiety, depression and trauma.

Think about time commitment. Most of my individual sessions and group classes last about 90 minutes but you can find a variety of breathwork classes to suit your needs. How much time do you have to give? Some of my clients come regularly to breathwork, weekly or biweekly and others just come when they feel like they need it. You get to make it work for you. This is about being in choice always when you are in your healing journey. It can take just one session to experience a shift.

Know the facilitator. Not all breathwork facilitators are the same. You could get a certificate as a facilitator in a weekend or you could do a long program like mine that requires study combined with supervised experience. You want a person who is trauma informed, is clear about safety and boundaries and puts you at ease in their process. Safety is my top priority. You are in a vulnerable state when you are in breathwork with your eyes closed. There must be some trust between you and the facilitator. I have been trained by Zach Rehder and consult with him when the need arises. I have a community of other facilitators I can reach out to as well. I have facilitated both individual and group sessions and actively participate in my own breathwork practice.

Find the ease. It’s in our western culture to go hard at everything we do. Sometimes we even like to combine two or three really great things together thinking we will get even better value out of the experience. I want to invite you to consider finding a breathwork that isn’t about pushing (replicating our capitalistic ideals) and instead helps you get maximum benefit from following what is right for you. You might see breathwork classes that combine float tanks, psychedelics, sound baths, yoga and cold plunges. It isn’t to say that any of these things are bad. There is just something so special about simply experience breath on it’s own, without complication, especially if you are new to breathwork.
